How to Prepare and Give a Funny Retirement Speech

Retirement speeches can be some of the most memorable and funny speeches you will give on behalf of, or by, an employee who’s leaving a firm, either for retirement or for other reasons.

Retirement speeches are intended to recognize the employee for all of their hard work and energy put into the company, to reminisce over good times that were had at the office, and occasionally to poke fun at the employee in good-naturedly manner. Nothing says office camaraderie like being able to gently make fun of one another.

Here are a few hints on how to write a retirement speech that’s both heartfelt and funny.

First, a funny retirement speech needs to have less obvious humor. As they say in comedy less is more – more subtle humor works better than outright joking. Retirement speeches can go back over the contributions the person made to the company, yet do so in a slight joking fashion.

It’s common for people who write their own speeches to add in a little self-deprecation for laughs. Get input from all of the people they worked with. You’ll probably find that each co-worker has a different funny story to relate about the retiree.

When you write the speech, try to start off with a light note to keep people’s moods up – instead of focusing on the fact that this is a also a good-bye speech.

Next, write down notes of appreciation in honor of the retiree’s services and contributions. Everyone wants to feel appreciated. This can start out with mainly the person’s professional accomplishments and how they made working at that particular organization more of a pleasure.

This could include taking over someone else’s extra workload or volunteering to take on other projects that needed doing. Also, you can comment on how the person benefited other workers in a personal way, such as helping them through a personal crisis or something of the sort, as a means of acknowledgement.

If you want, you can also openly acknowledge any disputes that you or anyone else have had with the employee and offer amends for them in a mature manner, without being accusing in any way. Make light of any differences and always send on an upbeat, positive note.

Make certain that all possible grudges or issues are resolved so there are no bad feelings as this person leaves your company.
The last thing that should be written in a retirement speech is a farewell to the employee and a well-wishing on behalf of everyone present. Send them off with the best of wishes that they enjoy their retirement and reach all their remaining life goals.

Following these tips to make a funny retirement speech will help the end to successful employment and a good retirement celebration be memorable and will make the occasion as heartfelt and happy as possible. A good retirement speech is essential to give a personal send-off to a great employee.
